Breaking the Box

The labels we use to describe people can become the limits we place upon them.

Every organization runs on boxes.

Job titles. Performance ratings. Career tracks. Credentials. Assessments. Labels created to organize work and make decisions.

But descriptions can become ceilings.

Once someone has been placed inside a box, leaders begin to see the label instead of the person. Employees begin to make themselves smaller to fit the expectations surrounding them. Potential becomes hidden behind what someone has done, where they came from or what others believe they are capable of becoming.

Breaking the Box challenges audiences to see those limits, question them and build beyond them.

Every Box Tells a Story

Some boxes are assigned to us.

Not leadership material. Not ready. Too inexperienced. Too old. Too different. Too difficult. Not educated enough.

Others are boxes we build for ourselves.

I am only my job title. I missed my chance. People like me do not do things like that. This is as far as I can go.

Repeat a label often enough and it stops sounding like an opinion.

It starts sounding like the truth.

I Know What It Means to Be Defined by a Box

I dropped out of school and received my GED at fifteen while in a psychiatric hospital.

The systems around me had already begun writing the ending to my story. Addiction, homelessness and failure seemed far more likely than a career, a degree or a future I could choose for myself.

Years later, I earned a doctorate from the University of Pennsylvania and built a career helping people and organizations unlock their capacity to learn and grow.

My story is unusual. The pattern underneath it is not.

People everywhere are living inside stories about who they are, what they can contribute and what is still possible for them. Organizations reinforce those stories every time they confuse a person's current position with their future potential.

The Breaking the Box Framework

See It

Recognize the labels, assumptions and systems shaping what you believe is possible.

Question It

Ask who created the box, what purpose it serves and whether it is still true.

Break It

Challenge the behaviors and beliefs that keep the limitation in place.

Build Beyond It

Create a new way of operating that expands possibility for yourself and others.

What Your Audience Will Take Away

  • Recognize the labels limiting their decisions and potential
  • Separate identity from title, history and circumstance
  • Challenge assumptions about who is capable of contributing
  • Create greater visibility for overlooked talent
  • Replace limiting narratives with evidence of possibility
  • Build cultures where people are seen for what they can become, not only what they have already done

This Is Not a Message About Ignoring Reality

Boxes sometimes contain useful information.

Qualifications matter. Experience matters. Performance matters. Organizations need structures and standards.

The danger begins when a useful data point becomes a complete judgment about a person.

Breaking the Box is about refusing to decide too early who someone is allowed to become.

Someone in Your Organization Has Stopped Raising Their Hand

Not because they have nothing to contribute.
Because the box has taught them that nobody will see it.
It is time to break it.
